Cllr George Madgwick serves as the County Councillor for North East Havant and represents Paulsgrove on Portsmouth City Council, where he was first elected in 2021. He is the Leader of the Reform UK Group on Hampshire County Council and Chairs the Corporate Services and Resources Select Committee.

George entered politics after founding the Portsmouth Independents Party in 2021. In just over two years, the party grew to become the Official Opposition on Portsmouth City Council, reflecting strong local support for an alternative approach to local government. Following his move to Reform UK, he now represents the party at both county and city level and plays an active role in the newly established Hampshire and Solent Combined County Authority (HSCCA), helping to shape strategic decisions on transport, housing, skills and economic development across the region.

Alongside his council responsibilities, George serves on the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Authority and is committed to improving public services, strengthening local accountability and ensuring value for taxpayers. As Chair of Hampshire County Council’s Corporate Services and Resources Select Committee, he leads scrutiny of governance, finance and the council’s corporate functions.

Before entering public office, George built a successful career in hospitality and entrepreneurship, across Hampshire, Essex & West Sussex. His commercial background provides him with first hand experience of the opportunities and challenges facing businesses, employers and high streets.

George is also recognised for his community work. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped coordinate and personally funded the provision of more than 10,000 meals to homeless and vulnerable people across Portsmouth and Hampshire as part of a volunteer group that was awarded the Freedom of the City by Portsmouth City Council in recognition of its contribution to the community.

A law graduate and graduate of the Local Government Association Leadership Academy, George is a regular commentator on national television and radio, contributing to discussions on local government, public policy and current affairs. He lives in Portsmouth and remains passionate about championing the interests of residents, supporting economic growth and ensuring Hampshire and the Solent continue to thrive.
